Manholes are built long before road surfaces are laid. When the tarmac goes down there is frequently a discrepancy between the level of the road and the level of the manhole cover. Something is needed, therefore, underneath the metal grating, to build the cover up and make it flush with the surface tarmac.

Traditionally mortar has been used to perform this important function. Unfortunately mortar, when laid in a thick bed, lacks sufficient strength to resist pressure and can deteriorate over time, leaving the manhole cover without support. As a result the cover often breaks under the weight of heavy vehicles.

Cradley Special Brick manufacture “Spacing Bricks”of engineering quality with very high compressive strength. These bricks are offered in a variety of sizes so they can be used beneath the metal grating to provide impressive support for the cover. Using spacing bricks help protect against dangerous breakage and costly repairs.

How it works

The diagrams right show a typical manhole construction using mortar to bring the plate up to road level, and alternatively, using Cradley’s spacing bricks. As can be seen, invariably the mortar crumbles away under the compression ofheavy loads.

This causes the manhole plate to drop and the surrounding road surface to deteriorate.

Our spacing bricks are supplied in various thicknesses allowing exact height matching and extremely high load tolerances to be applied.

Other Applications

These versatile little bricks can be used in a variety of other ways too;

• Their strength makes them a robust and time saving method of altering foundation heights.
• The thinness of the bricks makes them a useful alternative to creasing tiles, laid under capping and coping stones on walls.
• Like all Cradley Special Brick smooth specials the spacing bricks have a very smooth finish making them attractive to use for ground work, taking the place of paving bricks when used in wet lay paving.
